Marvel rings in the new year with Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting's New Avengers #1! The universe is on a collision course with another, and the only people able to stop it are the Illuminati, Marvel Universe's smartest and most powerful team of heroes. Black Panther, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Mister Fantastic, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and The Beast are the only minds on the Earth capable of standing against the invading universe. But that isn't the only new series of the year! Spinning directly out of the events of Amazing Spider-Man #699.1, Morbius, The Living Vampire #1 follows the haunted existence of Dr. Michael Morbius, scientist turned monster. Writer Joe Keatinge and artist Richard Elson tell a story of a man whose curse stands in the way of him being the hero he really wants to be. Marvel is also kicking off a five-part, five week Punisher event in Punisher Nightmare #1 by Scott Gimple and Mark Texeira. When Jake Niman's family is killed during a mob hit in Central Park, Frank Castle quickly goes on the hunt for those guilty of the all too familiar crime.
DC Comic's 'Death of the Family' event continues into the new year in Teen Titans #15 by Scott Lobdell and Brett Booth. Despite their problems, Red Robin and the Red Hood must join forces if they have any hope of standing against the Joker, and Batgirl guest-stars in this tie-in issue. Then, Red Lanterns #15 continues 'Rise of the Third Army.' Atrocitus stands against the Manhunters while Rankorr learns the cost of his rage. Scott Snyder's amazing, history-spanning vampire tale begins its hiatus with American Vampire #34. Skinner and Pearl have survived halfway through the twentieth century as the book hits a major turning point.
For something a little different, consider IDW's newest cross-over event: Mars Attacks the IDW universes! The Martians have targeted five different universes in what is sure to be a very odd and fun(ny) story that is sure please fan's of their previous Infestation events and new readers alike. The weekly event starts off with Mars Attacks: Popeye by Martin Powell and Terry Beatty. Popeye, Olive Oyl, Alice the Goon, the Sea Hag, and the rest of everyone's favorites must stand against the horrible invaders from space.
