New Avengers for a new year this Wednesday, January 2

The staff of Dr. No's Comics & Games wishes everyone a happy and safe New Year's Day! The store will be open regular hours (11 am to 8 pm) Tuesday, January 1, and new comics will be on our shelves Wednesday, January 2 as soon as we open!

Marvel rings in the new year with Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting's New Avengers #1! The universe is on a collision course with another, and the only people able to stop it are the Illuminati, Marvel Universe's smartest and most powerful team of heroes. Black Panther, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Mister Fantastic, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and The Beast are the only minds on the Earth capable of standing against the invading universe. But that isn't the only new series of the year! Spinning directly out of the events of Amazing Spider-Man #699.1, Morbius, The Living Vampire #1 follows the haunted existence of Dr. Michael Morbius, scientist turned monster. Writer Joe Keatinge and artist Richard Elson tell a story of a man whose curse stands in the way of him being the hero he really wants to be. Marvel is also kicking off a five-part, five week Punisher event in Punisher Nightmare #1 by Scott Gimple and Mark Texeira. When Jake Niman's family is killed during a mob hit in Central Park, Frank Castle quickly goes on the hunt for those guilty of the all too familiar crime.

DC Comic's 'Death of the Family' event continues into the new year in Teen Titans #15 by Scott Lobdell and Brett Booth. Despite their problems, Red Robin and the Red Hood must join forces if they have any hope of standing against the Joker, and Batgirl guest-stars in this tie-in issue. Then, Red Lanterns #15 continues 'Rise of the Third Army.' Atrocitus stands against the Manhunters while Rankorr learns the cost of his rage. Scott Snyder's amazing, history-spanning vampire tale begins its hiatus with American Vampire #34. Skinner and Pearl have survived halfway through the twentieth century as the book hits a major turning point.



For something a little different, consider IDW's newest cross-over event: Mars Attacks the IDW universes! The Martians have targeted five different universes in what is sure to be a very odd and fun(ny) story that is sure please fan's of their previous Infestation events and new readers alike. The weekly event starts off with Mars Attacks: Popeye by Martin Powell and Terry Beatty. Popeye, Olive Oyl, Alice the Goon, the Sea Hag, and the rest of everyone's favorites must stand against the horrible invaders from space.

Atlantis War Begins, Amazing Spider-Man Ends on 12/26!

The staff of Dr. No's Comics & Games would like to wish everyone a very happy holidays and safe travel to anyone visiting family and friends. As a reminder, Dr. No's will be open Christmas Day (that's Tuesday, December 25) from 1:00 to 6:00 pm, so stop by and say hello! Also, new comics (the few there are) will be on shelves Wednesday, December 26. That's right, Christmas will not delay the shipment this year.

The biggest book this week (both figuratively and literally) is Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man #700 by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. This is it! The final issue of ASM, and you won't believe what you read. Doc Ock has switched minds with Peter Parker, leaving him in a dying husk of a body. Meanwhile, Ock is testing the limits of his new powers and social life. Will Peter be able to figure a way out of this dire situation before it is too late? Avenging Spider-Man #15.1 is also out and corresponds with the events of ASM #700.

DC Comics kicks off the cross over event 'Throne of Atlantis' with Justice League #15 by Geoff Johns and the new art team of Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. The Justice League will have to work together if they have any hope of stopping the forces of Atlantis. Then, Atlantis' assault on the surface world continues in Aquaman #15 by Johns and Ardian Syaf. And don't forget Before Watchmen: Nite Owl #4 by Michael J. Straczynski and John Higgins, with a "Crimson Corsair" back-up store by Higgins.

Being a light week, it is a great time to try out a new series like this week's Mara #1 by Brian Wood and newcomer Ming Doyle. In a society obsessed with sports and war, one young woman becomes the focus of attention when she manifests supernatural abilities on live television. Mara Prince was at the top of her game until her display of powers, now she is famous for all the wrong reasons. Wood explores the themes of superpowered people, celebrity worship, corporate and political issues, and feminism.

Tons of great new comics this Wednesday, December 19

Marvel wants to make sure readers have plenty of books for any holiday travel they may have coming up, so look for lots of great NOW! titles on the shelf this Wednesday. The Avengers have been captured by Ex Nihlo--a galactic being bent on terraforming the Earth. After being returned to Earth as a warning, Captain America must bring together a team of super heroes to stand against Ex Nihlo and his partners in evolution in Avengers #2. Witness the next era of the Avengers, now!
Several of the Avenger's solo titles continue this
week as well: Captain America #2, Thor, God of Thunder #3, and Indestructible Hulk #2. I hope you're ready for Avengers Arena #2 because the action doesn't stop after the shocking conclusion to last week's issue. Arcade pits Deathlocket against Annihilation's Cammi and Avenger Academy's Hazmat. Thunderbolts #2 brings together several characters that are no strangers to death--Red Hulk, Venom, Elektra, Deadpool, and the Punisher--to stop the MU's most deadly villains. Then, Cable and X-Force #2 continues the new X-Force's quest to save the future. When it comes to the future, the original X-Men are seeing a world they never meant to create in All New X-Men #4. Other great titles to check out this week include A Plus X #3, FF #2, and Uncanny X-Force #35.

DC introduces a new series strait from the pages of JSA: The Liberty Files: JSA, Liberty Files: The Whistling Skulls #1 by B. Clay Moore and Tonny Harris. The Nazi warmachine continues to push through 1940s Europe, and it is up to one strange duo to solve one of the most bizarre mysteries of their time. Joker attacks Haly's Circus in Nightwing #15, a "Death of the Family" tie-in issue! "Rise of the Third Army" continues in Green Lantern #15 as Earth's new Lantern meets Guy Gardner and Green Lantern: New Guardians #15 as Kyle Rayner attempts to recruit the greedy Larfleeze to his cause. And don't miss Before Watchmen: Moloch #2, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #5, and other great titles!

Readers may also want to check out Marvel's Castle: A Calm Before the Storm #1 by Peter David and Robert Atkins. This all new miniseries based on ABC's hit show continues the Derrick Storm adaptation from the previous graphic novels but can still be enjoyed by new readers and fans of the show. Then, DC presents Django Unchained #1 by Quentin Tarantino and R.M. Guera. This adaptation presents the full blood-soaked screenplay that includes scenes not in the final theatrical release.

Avengers enter the arena this Wednesday, December 10

This week has a couple new Marvel NOW! titles for readers to try out. Fans' of the film Battle Royale or the book The Hunger Games should try out Avengers Arena #1 by writer Dennis Hopeless and artist Kev Walker. Someone has captured sixteen super powered young adults and placed them on a secluded island. Their captor gives them two choices: fight or die. Only one of them will make it off the island alive. Featuring members from the Runaways, the Avengers Academy, and Darkhawk, this book is sure to have someone's favorite character. The only question is: will he or she survive?
AA isn't the only book Dennis Hopeless has out this week. He teams up with fan favorite artist Salvador Lorroca for Cable and X-Force #1. With the techno-organice virus that has ravaged his body since infancy gone, Nathan Summers must now focus on the future, and things are not looking good. Cable brings together a group of uniquely qualified mutants--including Doctor Nemesis, Colossus, Domino, and Forge--to do what it will take to save the world, even if it means being branded mutant terrorists. Other NOW! titles this week include Fantastic Four #2, Iron Man #4, and Avengers Assemble #10. And don't miss Amazing Spider-Man #699.1 by Dan Slott, Joe Keatinge, and Valentine De Landro. Doctor Octopus' plan is in full swing when Morbius the Living Vampire frees himself from his recent captivity. Can he resist the siren song of his bloodlust? DC's "Death of the Family" continues this week. If you thought things couldn't get worse, don't miss these issues. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo continue their horrific tale in Batman #15. Joker has targeted the heart of the Bat-family, and now they must face the impossible. As Joker's plan is fully realized, the question becomes: how has he become so dangerous? Also, this issue contains a backup story featuring a confrontation between Joker and the Riddler. Then, with all of the bad stuff going on, Joker decides it is time for a wedding in Batgirl #15 by Gail Simone and Ed Benes. Batman and Robin #15 by Peter Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, and Mick Gray features the first meeting between Damian and the Joker! Has the clown finally meet someone as dangerous as he is? This issue has one of those neat die-cut covers! Harley continues her twisted reunion with the Joker in Suicide Squad #15 by Adam Glass and Fernando Dagnino.

Earth's Mightest Heroes join forces in Marvel NOW!'s newest book: Avengers #1. Johnathan Hickman--writer of hit series like Fantastic Four, FF, and S.H.I.E.L.D.--and artist Jerome Opena expand the Avenger's roster to take the team's influence from global to interplanetary. When a strange new creature, claiming to only want the betterment of humanity, appears, Captain America must put out a call to all of the world's heroes. Don't miss the start of this all new, twice-monthly series! Writer Daniel Way and artist Steve Dillon bring readers the all new Thunderbolts #1. General "Thunderbolt" Ross, AKA the Red Hulk, is putting together a team that's not afraid to do what's needed when push comes to shove: Venom, Elektra, Deadpool, the Punisher, and, of course, Red Hulk. With a team like that, the bad guys better watch out. Speaking of Mr. Castle, don't forget to pick up Punisher War Zone #2; the Avengers have finally decided that the Punisher must be stopped, but Frank doesn't give up easy. Some other great NOW! titles to keep an eye out for are All New X-Men #3 (you didn't read that wrong, two weeks in a row), Deadpool #3, and Iron Man #3.

After the last issue of Amazing Spider-Man, readers will not want to miss issue #699 this week. Writer Dan Slott reveals secrets that were put into motion back in "Ends of the Earth," "Spider-Island," and even ASM #600. With Doc in control, what will happen to the life Parker has built and will anyone be safe? This issue also features appearances of Morbius the Living Vampire (getting his own ongoing series soon), the Lizard, and many other Spidey foes. This all leads to the huge, final issue of Amazing Spider-Man.

Joker's reign of terror continues in Detective Comics #15 by John Layman, Jason Fabok, and Andy Clarke. The Penguin is missing and all signs point to the Joker. Plus, Clayface and Poison Ivy make a special guest appearance. If you are looking for something new, DC has Human Bomb #1 by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Jerry Ordway. Michael Taylor, an ex-marine, has uncovered a plot to destroy the United States with human bombs, but he may be the biggest threat of them all. To make up for lost time, readers get Before Watchmen: Comedian #4 and Before Watchmen: Minutemen #5 this week, both with Crimson Corsair backup stories by John Higgins. Other titles to look out for include Action Comics #15, Animal Man #15 and Swamp Thing #15 (continuing the "Rotworld" storyline), Earth 2 #7, and more of your favorite New 52 books.
