Comics Review By Jair!

Imperial #1

Marvel’s newest event series kicks off with a bang, as a series of regicides threatens the fragile peace of the galaxy. It’s a classic murder mystery — one certain to have universal consequences. When Hulk and Star-Lord are pulled into the middle of it, they’ll need all the allies they can get to make sense of the unfolding plot. Spectacular art and colors from Iban Coello, Federico Vicentini and Federico Blee make the issue pop.

Absolute Green Lantern #3

The slow-burn title of DC’s Absolute series, Green Lantern continues to intrigue. Stuck under the mysterious green dome of Abin Sur, Jo, John and Hal are just trying to make sense of what’s happening to their town — and to themselves. Can they devise a way to escape, or are they simply at the mercy of Abin Sur’s judgment? I’ve got no idea where the story is going, but every issue something happens that makes me go, “Word, that was gnarly!” And isn’t that what comics are all about?

The World to Come #1

This series is here to answer the age-old question: What if Black Panther were _____? Can you fill in the blank? If not, it's just another reason to check out this revival of Marvel's most iconic imprint. Superb writing and gritty art from Marvel veterans Christopher Priest and Joe Quesada elevate this book immensely, giving it a grand, cinematic feel worthy of the story being told. You’ll be left wondering not just what the future of Wakanda will be, but the world’s as well.

Ultimate Incursion #1

Miles Morales returns to the Ultimate universe — just not the one he knows. The issue jumps straight into the action with Miles on search-and-rescue duty when he runs into Earth-6160’s Ultimate Spider-Man and son. Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar pen a fun issue, playing off the dynamic between an experienced Miles Morales Spider-Man and a 35-year-old Peter Parker still in his rookie season as Spider-Man. Miles gets plenty of moments to shine — perhaps even to Peter’s chagrin. Jonas Scharf’s art adds to the kinetic action. It feels like Spidey could swing off the page at any moment. This issue is great for fans of Spider-People and anyone curious about the current Ultimate universe.

Be Not Afraid #1

An eerie small town, a mysterious child and a terrified mother — it’s hard to do what the title says when reading this supremely creepy new series from Boom. Written by Jude Ellison S. Doyle, the dialogue drips with supernatural menace, further complimented by Lisandro Estherren’s shadow-heavy art. Together, they give the issue a heavy feeling and the sense that the town’s inhabitants are privy to something we’re not — something wicked. If you like theology, thrillers or horror, this book is for you.
My name is Jair Tolliver.
I've worked at Dr No's for about 6 months and I've been patronizing them for half my life. I like comics, video games, music and sometimes sports.
I’m a GSU graduate, veteran sandwich artist and aspiring writer. Ask me about the X-Men or my anime car sometime.
I think all comics are good they're human expression, dreams put to a page through days, months and years of dedication. They're windows into other worlds, aspirations of all we can be, warnings of what we may become and everything in between. Above all I think comics can help us understand the things we often don't consider.
That's what I want these reviews to do, help folks understand maybe even appreciate something they haven't seen before, but yea lemme wrap this up I got books to file. Happy reading!
