Like many readers, everyone here at Dr. No's has enjoyed DC's venture into the past of Moore's Watchmen characters. This week, readers get Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #1 by award-winning writer J. Michael Straczynski and legendary artist Adam Hughes. Fans know Dr. Manhattan as a being of energy that is largely detached from humanity. However, before Manhattan, he was Dr. Jon Osterman, a brilliant atomic physicist transformed by a freak accident. Straczynski and Hughes explore who Dr. Osterman was before the accident and how a man as smart and as obsessed with time as he was could let such an accident happen. As always, Len Wein and John Higgins bring readers the continuing adventure of the Crimson Corsair as a back up feature in this issue.
DC has several other great titles this week. After a several week delay, Grant Morrison's Batman Incorporated #3 finally hits shelves, so don't miss the New 52 debut of Matches Malone! Then, the Scarecrow needs a test subject to perfect the ultimate fear toxin in Batman, The Dark Knight #12 by Gregg Hurwitz and David Finch. If something a little more high-flying is your taste, Superman #12 by Dan Jurgens and Jesus Merino pits The Man of Steel against a familiar enemy from the bottom of the ocean. And in Teen Titans #12 by Scott Lobdell and Brett Booth, Red Robin and Superboy face the full power of Wonder Girl's armor.
IDW celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Rocketeer with the help of writer Mark Waid, artist Chris Samnee and their new book Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom #1. With this new series, Waid and Samnee set out to capture all of the adventure, suspense and humor that Dave Stevens brought to his wonderful creation. A ship carrying an exotic, living cargo docks in Los Angeles and with it comes danger and mayhem. Cliff Secord, the Rocketeer, must leap into action. Speaking of action, a new character is introduced, and she is going to give Betty a run for her money.
While everyone waits for the next round of Avengers vs X-Men, check out Uncanny X-Men #17, a tie-in issue by Kieron Gillen and Daniel Acuna. The X-Men and Sinister stand-off for the last time, but will the group be prepared for what he has had planned since issue one? In Wolverine #312 by Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi, the identity of the red-headed woman is revealed as the return of Sabertooth marches on. If that isn't enough, Wolverine Annual #1 by Alan Davis brings to a close what Davis started in FF Annual #1 and Daredevil Annual #1. Finally, continue celebrating 50 years of web-slinging with Web of Spider-Man #129.1 by Stuart Moore and Damion Scott.All of the books mentioned above and those listed below will be available when Dr. No's opens its doors this Wednesday, August 22!
